Richard Norris In Conversation
Paperback launch at The Ivy House, Nunhead: an evening with Richard Norris (The Grid), acid house tales, punk roots and wild stories
Join us at The Ivy House in Nunhead for an evening with Richard Norris, the producer, musician and writer whose work has quietly shaped UK underground music for more than three decades.
This event celebrates the paperback publication of his memoir, Strange Things Are Happening: Adventures in Music, a vivid, funny and often surreal journey through punk, DIY indie, acid house and psychedelic pop.
From a suburban start in St Albans, Norris charts a path that takes in producing the UK’s first acid house album as Jack The Tab, becoming one of the few unsigned artists to appear on the cover of NME, and being there at the birth of the culture at Shoom and Spectrum during the 1988 Summer of Love.
He later found international success with The Grid, his acclaimed collaboration with Dave Ball (Soft Cell), and continued his psychedelic output through projects including Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve with Erol Alkan. His story is threaded with encounters and collaborations that bring the era to life, with appearances from the likes of Joe Strummer, Shaun Ryder, Timothy Leary and Sun Ra.
Expect conversation, readings, Q&A, and a few surprising detours. A proper happening for anyone interested in the hidden wiring of British counterculture, club history, and the people who connected it all.
