A Trio of Books with Janina Maher

Step by step workshop making three different handmade books

If you fancy having a go at making your own books but feel daunted by the processes then this may be the workshop for you! We will be working together and Janina will take us through all the steps to make 3 different styles of handmade book. They are all easy to make and need a minimum amount of equipment. Once the basics are mastered each of these styles of books can be taken in many different directions, using a variety of materials and by changing the sizes and shapes. The three books are :

1. Japanese stab stitch. A traditional style of book with a soft card cover and attractive stitching along one side of the book. The demonstration piece will be A6 landscape and a simple stitch pattern. Other stitch patterns will be provided.

2. Flower book. The inside pages are based on an origami fold and, once glued together, the pages open out like a flower. This book has stiff card covers, which we will cover with decorative paper. The demonstration piece will be 11cm square

3. Book in a jar. A tiny book, to fit in a jam jar. With binding based on French link stitch, we will add a lace ribbon for closure. The demonstration book will be 5cm wide by 2 cm deep and 10.5cm high

Step by step instructions and diagrams supplied for each of the 3 books and Janina will also show us other variations which we can try after the workshop.

The tutor can provide packs for all 3 books for a total of £12 (plus P+P if not collected beforehand).
