Join us for a roundtable where we unpack the social objective of the NPPF and explore what it means for social sustainability!

Join us to explore the ‘social objective’ in the draft NPPF! Like many of you, we are currently preparing our response to the draft National Planning Policy Framework. Our response is centred around the social objective and whether it is satisfactory when thinking about social sustainability as a broader concept.At Social Life we see social sustainability as a process for creating sustainable, successful places that promote wellbeing, by understanding what people need from the places they live and work. Social sustainability combines design of the physical realm with design of the social world - infrastructure to support social and cultural life, social amenities, systems for citizen engagement and space for people and places to evolve.While the NPPF recognises the social objective as fundamental to sustainable development, its current framing is largely focused on static outcomes and physical provisions (e.g. number and range of homes, well-designed and safe places, accessible facilities). This approach fails to define what this would look like in practice, demonstrating how planning can accommodate for community needs, creating liveable places that support long-term community resilience and wellbeing.To explore this further, we are hosting a roundtable discussion where we will discuss whether the social objective offers a suitable and extensive framework for achieving social sustainability.The event will begin with a short presentation from Social Life outlining our approach to social sustainability, followed by an open discussion for all attendees.
