Online event
Thursday 14 May  •  7 PM - 8:30 PM GMT+1
Overview

Online course providing essential tips for foster caring wild European hedgehogs. We will focus particularly on caring for orphaned hoglets.

A re-run of this popular course with a particular emphasis on caring for orphaned baby hoglets. The course is intended to provide tips, guidance and best practice for people foster caring wild european hedgehogs on behalf of a hedgehog rescue.

It will also be helpful background for anyone considering foster caring in the future.

I have over a decade's experience running a hospital for wild hedgehogs and training volunteers to help as foster carers. This course will provide you with the top tips I have learnt during this time and answers to the many questions asked by foster carers and people who have attended this online course in the past.

It is intended to supplement the advice and support given by your local hedgehog rescue. Please do not attempt to care for a wild hedgehog without support from a local rescue. This course will provide you with some essential skills and knowledge that can be used alongside information provided by your rescue. It will signpost opportunities for further and more in depth learning.

We will cover the following topics with plenty of opportunity to ask questions. A list of equipment and medications talked about during the course will be provided to participants after the event.

  • Legalities of caring for wild hedgehogs
  • Disturbed nests - what to do to prevent the need for rescue
  • Accommodation options for wild hedgehogs with a particular emphasis on the needs of hoglets
  • Bedding and equipment required for caring for hoglets and also where mum and babies have been rescued
  • Hygiene for you and the hedgehogs
  • What and how to feed hoglets - stages in hoglet development
  • Regular checks
  • Emergencies - what to look out for focusing particularly on issues found in hoglets
  • Preparing hedgehogs for release and how/where to release hedgehogs hand raised as hoglets
  • Further learning

Funds raised will support my the creation of a wildlife pond in our wildlife garden in East Yorkshire.

It is possible to run this course as a bespoke course on request. Please get in touch for details.

This will be the only course focusing specifically on hoglets in 2026.
