Taller de traducción : La Celestina

Join us to explore and translate texts by two iconic authors who reflect on the religious education of women through very different lenses

The Instituto Cervantes in Manchester invites you to take part in a literary translation workshop from Spanish into English, focused on la Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea (first published in 1499) and attributed to Fernando de Rojas. Considered a key work of Hispanic literature, it stands at the crossroads between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, between learned literary tradition and the vitality and oral quality of everyday life and marginal environments.

During the workshop, we will work with two short but significant excerpts from the book: one illustrating the magical traditions of medieval incantations, and another with a strong social dimension that exposes the hypocrisy and hierarchies shaping social status.

Translating and discussing these passages will give us an opportunity to approach the distant linguistic and social reality of late‑medieval Spanish, analysing possible solutions, comparing strategies, and examining existing English translations.

Participants will receive the texts in advance so they can bring their translation proposals to the session

El Instituto Cervantes de Manchester invita a participar en un taller de traducción literaria del español al inglés centrado en La Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea (publicada por pirmera vez en 1499) y atribuida a Fernando de Rojas. Considerada una pieza clave de la literatura hispánica, a medio camino entre la edad media y el renacimiento, entre la tradición literaria culta y la oralidad y energía de la vida común y la marginalidad.

Durante el taller trabajaremos con dos breves fragmentos significativos de la obra, ejemplo de las tradiciones mágicas de los conjuros medievales por una parte y, por otra, un texto de fuerte carga social donde se denuncian la hipocresía y las jerarquías que marcan los estatus sociales.

Traducir y comentar estos breves pasajes nos permitirá asomarnos a la lejana realidad lingüística y social del español tardomedieval, analizando soluciones posibles y comparando estrategias y las traducciones ya publicadas en inglés.

Los inscritos recibirán con antelación los textos para comentar en la sesión su propuesta de traducción.
