All Nature Has a Feeling: Writing about the Nearby Wild

Do you enjoy watching the birds in your garden or the local park? Are you interested in the wild flowers and trees that you pass on your way into town or on country walks? Would you like to learn more about the natural history of the landscape around you? Perhaps you’d like to share your ideas and enthusiasm with others, broaden your knowledge of wildlife and place, and explore your own creative voice.

This workshop will focus on writing about nearby nature, drawing inspiration from the garden at Clare Cottage (where's Nic's great, great, great grandfather took his first steps in the 1820s), the local landscape and Clare's poetry. The session will include short writing exercises, discussion of extracts and the opportunity to share our writing (which will always be optional). We’ll come away with prompts, several short pieces and a range of ideas about how our drafts might be developed into longer written work.

The workshop is suitable for everyone, whether you'd like inspiration on where to start or advice about how to develop your writing. Nic also runs follow up courses and mentors writers.

Workshop Tutor

Nic is an author, editor and Guardian country diarist. She works for BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine, specialising in wildlife, wild plants and environmental issues. Her nature memoir, Land Beneath the Waves, on nature, place and chronic illness, was published in 2025 and listed as one of BBC Wildlife Magazine's Best Nature Books of the year.

Her work has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies including Under the Changing Skies: The Best of The Guardian Country Diaries 2018-2024, Going to Ground: An Anthology of Nature and Place, Moving Mountains and Women on Nature. Nic volunteers for her local Wildlife Trust and loves writing about the nearby wild.
