Innovative and dynamic, the university continues to expand the boundaries of knowledge and impact.As part of the UCL200 celebrations, and taking place during Mental Health Awareness Week, the symposium will bring together leading academic voices and professional services colleagues from across UCL.The symposium will consider how health and wellbeing has been understood over the past two centuries, while also looking ahead to the changing demands on health and wellbeing.See the full agenda below.

Opening Address

Professor George Ploubidis  - 

Living Longer but Not Healthier: The Generational Health Drift 

Two to three bullet points outlining the key themes or topics of your presentation 

Health is no longer improving across generations 

Despite longer life expectancy, newer generations are not consistently healthier than previous ones at the same age. The Generational Health Drift challenges the long-held assumption that health improves steadily over time. 

Social and policy environments shape health trajectories 

Changes in economic conditions, social structures, and public policies play a major role in influencing how health evolves across generations. 

Implications for work and the labour market 

If younger generations experience poorer health earlier in life, this could reduce labour market participation, limit productivity, and increase pressure on employers and policymakers to support a healthier, longer working population.

Dr Yang Hu  - 

Digitalisation and AI: Implications for inequality, job quality, and wellbeing - 

How is the digitalisation of work reshaping social inequalities, job quality, and worker well-being? 

What role does AI play in (re)producing work inequalities? 

This talk will explore these questions based on large-scale cross-national evidence to shed new light on how the digital/AI is changing our work (and family) lives.

Professor Aimee Spector - 

Managing Menopause in the Workplace  - 

Midlife women are the fastest-growing segment of the workforce, often at the peak of their careers as they experience menopause transition.  

1 in 10 women leave work due to menopause symptoms; 1 in 4 reduce working hours.  

UK Menopause Mandate Survey of 15,000 found ‘brain fog’ the main symptom, reported by 86% of women and suggesting a critical link with workplace performance.  

This talk will highlight current understandings and future steps towards supporting menopause within the workplace. 

Session 2

Professor Angel Chater - 
Creating the Conditions to Thrive: Designing Behaviour Change Interventions for Health, Wellbeing and Recovery - 

Drawing on health psychology and behavioural science, this talk explores how behaviour change interventions can support health, wellbeing and recovery across workplace and public health settings. Using real-world examples, Professor Chater will discuss how healthier and more compassionate environments can help individuals and communities adapt, recover and thrive.
