First Steps in Linocut Printmaking

Carousel Printmaking Studio is an accessible community space providing opportunities for artists and the wider community to access quality printmaking equipment facilities and education. Though volunteer led we also offer work opportunities to local artists and educators through our programme of regular practical workshops.

New courses for 2026 including gelli plate printing, linocut, woodcut, fabric block printing, and a special series of evenings with flowers!

<h3>Learn to carve an A5 linocut from a drawing, design or photograph, and print a small edition of original prints.</h3> Using the professional quality equipment and materials at Carousel Print Studio, you will learn how to print by hand and using a press, and create a carved block design for you to print again and again. You will leave with your own original artworks ready to frame!This course is suitable for beginners.What will I need to bring?All materials and equipment will be provided.Please bring an idea for a simple image or design to draw from or trace. Your design should fit within an A5 rectangle. High contrast images work best. If you are copying a design please check the copyright.Please wear old clothes as printing can get messy. Aprons will be provided.You may wish to bring a packed lunch. Teas, coffee and biscuits are provided.

<h3>About Carousel Print Studio</h3>Carousel Print Studio is a not for profit charity based on the ground floor of Yorkshire Art Space, Exchange Place Studios in Sheffield. Carousel provide printmaking workshops and facilities for creatives in Sheffield, in our bright, warm, accessible and well equipped printmaking studio and in community venues.Carousel studio is located on the ground floor just to the left of reception. The doors are widened for ease of access and there is an accessible toilet. <h3>About the Tutor</h3>This course is led by Sheffield artist and printmaker Helen Darlington.A graduate of Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University, Helen has worked for several visual art institutions in the arta including Cupola Gallery, The Art House Wakefield, and Site Gallery.For the last ten years, Helen has traded as Robin’s Room, making and selling fine linen home wares hand printed with her own intricate linocut designs.Helen's work can be found on <a href="https://www.notonthehighstreet.com/robinsroom" title="https://www.notonthehighstreet.com/robinsroom" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">not on the high street</a>
