Mapping Stories of Place – Developing the Stories in Motion Exhibition

Join the Cultures of_ team for a talk on the development of the Stories in Motion exhibition - a film and moving image exhibition celebrating the culture, communities and everyday stories of Kirklees.

This session will explore the collaborative work carried out with creative and cultural organisations across Kirklees that helped shape the exhibition, from its early co-creation processes through to its themes of learning, health and wellbeing, and heritage.

The talk will reflect on how the project brings together stories of place, identity, belonging and wellbeing from across Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Spen Valley, Batley, Holme Valley, Colne Valley, Denby Dale and beyond.

This discussion will also consider the wider questions at the heart of Stories in Motion:

  • what stories do we tell about Kirklees?
  • who gets to tell them?
  • how can film help make local experiences, histories and cultural life more visible?

More broadly, the session will look at how the exhibition aims to stimulate ongoing conversations about culture in Kirklees, and the role of place-based cultural development in shaping more inclusive ways of participating in culture.

Cultures of_ Team:

Professor Rowan Bailey (Professor of Culture, People and Place, and Director of the Centre for Cultural Ecologies in Art, Design and Architecture)

Dr Claire Tymon (Research Fellow, Community Innovation Practitioner)

Dr Claire Booth-Kurpnieks (Research Fellow)

Dr Laura Mateescu (Research Fellow)

Claire Bend (Researcher & Film technician)
