Nightjar Wildlife Walk (East Sussex)
A guided wildlife walk as the sun sets in search of Britain's most mysterious bird.
An encounter with the enigmatic Nightjar is surely one of the greatest wildlife experiences in the UK. It's certainly the strangest.
As the sun sets over the heath the summer air is filled with a pulsating, hypnotic noise that somehow comes from everywhere and nowhere. And then the legendary Nightjar appears...
For tonight's wildlife walk we'll meet on the heathlands of Ashdown Forest in search of this mysterious bird. We'll start the evening with a talk all about Nightjars - their lives, their relatives and the folklore that surrounds them.
Then we'll head out onto the heath as the sun sets - looking for Tree Pipits, Woodlarks, Dartford Warblers and other heathland wildlife. As the light fades we'll wait for the Nightjars to awaken and take to the skies.
Sussex naturalist Michael Blencowe has been entranced by Nightjars since he was 9 years old - and the unique thrill of watching these birds has never left him. He has been leading Nightjar events in Sussex for almost 15 years. So if you want to see a middle-aged man get over-excited join us for this special event. More details michaelblencowe.com
Location: We'll be searching on heathlands on Ashdown Forest, East Sussex. Full details will be sent to you nearer the event.
We are also running a Nightjar event in West Sussex on 13 June(see michaelblencowe.com)
Please bring a torch and warm clothing.
