A conversation with Santiago Fouz-Hernandez and Betty Bigas about Bigas Luna filmography

We are pleased to announce the presentation of The Films of Bigas Luna, a comprehensive and insightful study by scholar Santiago Fouz Hernández. This book offers a fresh, rigorous exploration of the cinematic universe of Spanish filmmaker Bigas Luna, whose work remains one of the most provocative, visually inventive, and culturally influential in contemporary European cinema.

In this new volume, Fouz Hernández traces Bigas Luna’s artistic evolution, from his early experimental films to his internationally acclaimed trilogy on desire, identity, and Mediterranean culture. Through detailed analysis and an engaging critical perspective, the author examines the director’s recurring themes, aesthetic innovations, and contributions to the representation of gender, sexuality, and national identity on screen.

The presentation will delve into the book’s key arguments and its relevance for film studies, highlighting how Bigas Luna’s oeuvre continues to inspire filmmakers, scholars, and audiences around the world. It will also offer an opportunity to discuss the director’s legacy and the renewed academic interest in his work.

This event invites film enthusiasts, students, and anyone interested in Spanish cinema to discover new ways of understanding one of Spain’s most distinctive and imaginative filmmakers.

The event will be a conversation with the author of the book, Santiago Fouz-Hernández, and Betty Bigas, Bigas Luna's daughter. The Q&A will be moderated by Joana Granero, founding director of the London Spanish Film Festival.
