At Birkhill House CIC is an animal assisted activity and crafting centre near Earlston in the Scottish Borders. Our mission is to improve mental health in the Scottish Borders through caring, creativity and collaboration.Working with local makers and artists, we offer a mixture of modern and traditional crafting opportunities ranging from pewter casting to embroidery, stained glass to paper making. We are in the process of developing our fleece and fibre programme, putting an emphasis on traditional hand-processing techniques such as skirting, picking, carding and spinning. Making the most of our connections with local fibre artisans, we offer workshops in knitting, crochet, weaving and felting. We also stock kits with patterns specially designed by local makers for At Birkhill House. Our workshop programme, kits and products allow us to support our animals and our partnership projects.The focus here is on wellness and mindfulness – taking a moment out to be compassionate and nurture the creative side in all of us.Set on nine acres of beautiful land about 30 miles south of Edinburgh city centre, the workshops take place in renovated stables dating back to the early 1800s. Join in with one of our three Makers Groups to learn new skills, meet like-minded folk and create gorgeous items for our shop shelves.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays &amp; Thursdays, 10am-1pmThe Makers Group At Birkhill House was created in response to a need identified for opportunities to learn new skills and alleviate social isolation.What we noticed about some visiting groups during the pilot period of our Makers Group in 2022 is that the social aspect of creating around the table and the skills developed during that process seemed equal in importance to the finished products themselves. Attendees were keen to soak up the relaxed atmosphere, share experiences and learn together - and everyone was delighted when they felt that work they had done here could also somehow benefit our project.So we introduced five-six week blocks in which participants could learn two or three new techniques/skills together, create items that would end up on the shop shelves here and hopefully make new connections with like-minded folk. Our groups also help to prep and package kits and test-drive new products.Supported by the National Lottery Community Fund, these blocks are FREE to attend. Tea/coffee and lunch are included and there is also a small bursary to help with travel expenses. Generally, groups have no more than six people/block. So successful was the uptake that we now have three groups meeting weekly!The next block focuses on Natural Dye Garden activities: Tuesday 21st April - 19th May 2026 Wednesday 22nd April - 20th May 2026 Thursday 23rd April - 21st May 2026 * As much as possible, we ask participants to attend all the sessions in the block. However, we understand that life sometimes gets in the way. But please do consider how busy you will be before booking so that you do not take the space from someone who may be able to attend all sessions.
