Neurodiversity Awareness Training for Driving Instructors
A training session on how to support neurodiverse learners. There will be theory and a facilitated, solution-focused discussion.
A bespoke training session for driving instructors focused on understanding neurodiversity and practical approaches to supporting neurodivergent learners in driving lessons.
The session will combine a short theoretical introduction with a facilitated, solution-focused discussion, allowing participants to reflect on their current experiences and identify practical strategies.
Part 1 – Understanding Neurodiversity (1 hour)
An introduction to neurodiversity and how it may present in young people learning to drive. The part of the session be an overview neurodevelopmental differences including:
- Autism
- ADHD
- Dyspraxia
- Dyslexia
Part 2 – Solution-Focused Discussion (1 hour)
The second part of the session will be a facilitated discussion with participants, using a solution-focused approach to explore real experiences from instructors.
Intended Outcomes
The training aims to support instructors to:
- Develop a basic understanding of neurodiversity and neurodevelopmental differences
- Recognise common characteristics associated with neurodvergent learners
- Increase confidence in supporting neurodivergent learners during driving lessons
- Identify practical adaptations that can support attention, learning and confidence
- Share experiences with peers and develop solution-focused strategies
- Leave with greater awareness of both strengths and challenges associated with neurodivergent learners
