Moving and Handling of children with physical disabilities

Occupational Therapy supports children and young people with their independence in aspects of daily living or their participation in activities at home and at school. The service provides advice on new ways for a child or young person to complete a task, or how they could use adapted equipment to help them participate or be more independent.

Training for setting staff in mainstream schools on safe moving and handling of children with physical disabilities

The Marlowes Health and Wellbeing Centre

Introducing our Safe Moving and Handling Training for the Children's workforce across Hertfordshire. This is a training course specifically for teachers, LSAs, MSAs and SENCos in mainstream setting who support children with physical and/or neurological impairments where the child is unable to move without adult physical assistance. The sessions are aimed at any setting staff from preschool to secondary school who provide hands on support to a child with physical impairments. This includes access to toileting and therapeutic equipment.Staff attendance at this session supports settings to comply with their duties under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations (1992). These sessions are not suitable for those seeking training or advice on general back care or how to ensure physical safety of children demonstrating challenging behaviour.Attendees are asked to complete a short workbook of activities prior to attending a 3 hour face to face session. The workbook will be emailed following booking of your place and covers the theory and legal duties for Manual Handling. During the face to face session delegates are asked to engage in activities which involve some physical movements. On the day you will be required to inform the trainer if you have any pre-existing conditions which may affect your ability to participate in these activities.The wearing of face masks is still a requirement within NHS clinic sites.Refreshments are not provided, but you are welcome to bring a hot drink in your own travel mug or a water bottle with you.PLEASE NOTE: There is no onsite parking at Marlowes Health &amp; Wellbeing Centre so please allow extra time for parking. There are nearby public car parks.
