21st  International Colloquium on Shipping Law in Transition

The IISTL (at the College of Law and Criminology, Swansea University), promotes research into issues of importance in international shipping and trade law, through the activities of its individual members, as well as on a collective basis. Chief among these initiatives is the busy programme ofcolloquia and symposiaon contemporary developments organised by the Institute. Smaller research seminars are also convened, whereguest speakersare invited to address the Institute staff and guests. The Institute embraces interdisciplinary research and welcomes the participation of specialists from other disciplines. The IISTL Research Library also provides an outstanding body of research materials for its members and visiting scholars to consult.

The Colloquium will be held, as ever, at Swansea University and will bring together leading academics and industry professionals for engaging and authoritative discussion. We hope the programme we have assembled will interest not only lawyers, practitioners, and operators, but also for those working in finance and insurance (particularly maritime liability), and academics.We are grateful to Informa Law from Routledge for sponsoring this event.

PROGRAMMEShipping law must always evolve to reflect changing trading and technological practices. All this tests and often disrupts traditional doctrines, sometimes producing unexpected results. While pursuing commercial certainty remains a common objective for participants and courts, recent years have also seen growing regulatory intervention and imposition of policies that perceptibly constrain freedom of contract. Shipping law is, in short, undergoing a period of transition.This Colloquium will examine how this transition affects carriage, sale, and insurance contracts, as well as liability regimes, including limitations of liability. Discussions will as ever span the national, international, and EU implications, and as always will be led by panels of top professionals and academics.
