ARA ALES Lunchtime Seminar: "Measuring your learning impact: (Re)Introducing the Generic Learning Outcomes"

The Archives for Learning and Education Section’s second event in 2026 will be held using Microsoft Teams on Wednesday 20th May, from 1 to 2pm.

Our speakers for this session are Rachel Tranter MBE, Director of GEM the Group for Education in Museums, and Jenni Waugh, a cultural engagement consultant. Their talk is entitled: “Measuring your learning impact: (Re)Introducing the Generic Learning Outcomes.”

The Generic Learning Outcomes (GLOs) are back! Refreshed to suit the inclusive learning and engagement delivery now delivered across the sector. The original GLOs framework was developed in 2003 to support museums, libraries and archives to understand and evidence the impact of their learning activity on a wide range of participants, going beyond factual processing and skills development to capture participants’ attitudes, behaviours, personal development and future inspiration. In 2025, GEM worked with Sam Bowen, SEND in museums consultant, and Dr Sarah Plumb of the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries, University of Leicester, to review and refresh the GLOs with a particular lens on inclusion. As a result, a new learning outcome, Sensory Engagement, has been introduced to reflect the current understanding of a fuller breadth of learning experiences. During this short presentation, Rachel Tranter, GEM Director, and Jenni Waugh, consultant, will introduce these proposed updates. There will be the opportunity for questions and discussion with them.

Tickets: £10 ARA Members / £15 Non-ARA Members. Closing date for bookings: Thursday 14 May, 17:00.
