Shaping the future: Children's rights and TV production
Be part of ongoing research into children's rights and TV production.
Join us at this event to contribute your ideas and insights to shaping the future on children's rights and TV production.
We will be exploring three core themes from our current research in partnership with the Institute for Screen Industries Research on this topic, providing early insight on findings and encouraging participants to contribute their own insights and reflections. The event is a part of the research methodology itself and your opportunity to engage on its progress and direction.
The day is organised into three two-hour sessions and you can join for one, two or all three.
9.30-11.30am – Session 1: Child employment
This session will explore what good child employment looks like in TV production and what aspects might start to tip it towards more problematic forms of child labour.
We will cover financial arrangements, education, working hours, safety, the transition to adult employment and the presence of children in a professional working environment. The session will include:
- Initial findings from surveys and interviews
- Contributions from other organisations working on these topics
- Workshop-style discussion on where the line between child employment and problematic child labour sits
11.30-12.00pm – BREAK
12.00-2.00pm – Session 2: Good practices for working parents
This session will look at the ways that changes to working practices in TV production can better support working parents and their children.
The session will include:
- Exploring some of the pioneering changes that are already happening
- Identifying some of the barriers that exist
- Workshop-style discussion on what else is needed to make such practices more of a feature of the TV industry
2.00-2.30pm – BREAK
2.30-4.30pm – Session 3: Child safeguarding
This session will explore the ways that current safeguarding practices relied on by productions may not always be adequate.
The session will include:
- Initial findings from interviews and surveys of chaperones and parents of child performers
- Contributions from other organisations working on these topics
- Workshop-style discussion on how to ensure that protection incorporates a focus on children’s voice and rights to participation.
All the sessions will involve participation and discussion from attendees, held under the Chatham House Rule.
