The Woolf Annual Lecture - The Struggle To Belong

The Woolf Institute is an independent interfaith charity founded in 1998, specialising in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. We work closely with the University of Cambridge to fund postgraduate students, teach students in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and in the Cambridge Theological Federation, and work in partnership with St Edmund's College. We conduct research projects across a wide variety of academic disciplines, and engage with public partners in schools, healthcare, grassroots interfaith groups, community organising, and public policy. Through research, education, and public engagement we seek to better understand these faiths, build trust between people of different faiths, and increase understanding and cooperation in society between people of faith and those with other beliefs and worldviews. We are committed to asking the difficult questions, listening to the experiences of others, and creating opportunities and spaces for people to encounter one another across difference.

A public lecture on nationhood, diversity and shared identity, delivered by former cabinet minister Professor John Denham.

No nation can be truly cohesive without a shared sense of belonging. In a divided England where identities are contested, this lecture will explore how both the state and a diverse civic society can shape a nationhood shared by all.The lecture will be followed by a response from Professor Michael Kenny (Bennett School for Public Policy) and a moderated Q&amp;A with the audience.About the speakersProfessor John Denham was Labour MP for Southampton Itchen (1992-2015) and served as a Minister (1997-2003 and 2007-2010). His final Ministerial role was as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and he chaired the Home Affairs Select Committee from 2003 - 2007)He is currently Professorial Research Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Relations and Director of the<a href="https://www.soton.ac.uk/ceip" title="https://www.soton.ac.uk/ceip" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Centre for English Identity and Politics</a>.Professor Michael Kenny is Head of Department at the Bennett School of Public Policy. He was previously the Inaugural Director of the Bennett Institute for Public Policy at the University of Cambridge. He previously held positions at: Queen’s University, Belfast; the University of Sheffield, where he was appointed Head of the Department of Politics; and Queen Mary University of London.
