Liberating Histories Vintage Magazine Workshop

Teesside ArchivesMiddlesbrough, England
Friday, Apr 17 from 1 pm to 3 pm
Overview

Get your hands on a Spare Rib! Part of our New Sisterhood living history project

Led by Dr Victoria Balzin and Dr Mel Waters from Northumbria University's Liberating Histories project, which explores UK feminist magazines from 1968 to the present day. This workshop gives you a special opportunity to look through a range of feminist magazines from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, including Spare RibScarlet Women, SapphoRed Rag, Shocking PinkMukti, Bad Attitude, Harpies and Quines, and many others. Together, we’ll explore how these magazines represent the experiences of women in the North East and consider the legacies of the women's liberation movement in relation to contemporary feminist campaigns. To what extent have feminist issues changed or stayed the same in our region, and what impact does digital media have on feminist debate and activism?
