Overview

Join artist Carol Holland at John Clare Cottage for a creative art journaling journey as we respond visually to John Clare’s poetry.

Over this six week course, we’ll explore and respond visually to John Clare’s poetry using Gelli-plate printing, charcoal, watercolour, and more. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, come explore your creative energy in a friendly, relaxed setting.

April 15 - Class 1: Zooming in on the minutia and Ecological Observation and Nature using charcoal, graphite to sketch and explore texture and collage.

April 22 - Class 2: Identity through exploring John Clare's poem "I Am." using watercolour and pen and ink to explore emotions and ideas.

April 29 - Class 3: Existentialism of John Clare - exploring the relationship of life and death through his poem "What is Life?" We will be exploring acrylic paints to monoprint, collaging images and layering charcoal and colour pencils.

May 6 - Class 4: Nostalgia - we will explore John Clare's poems "Childhood" and "The Peasant Boy" to reflect on how place, nature and enclosure intertwine to create a sense of loss and longing for what once was. You will make connections to your own life and respond through a variety of media.

May 13 - Class 5: Social and Rural Life: John Clare documented his reality through his poems. We will look at "The Shepherd's Calendar" and reflect on lost social traditions and work. We will make connections to our current social upheavals and loss of analogue way of life.

May 20 - Class 6: Enclosure and Environmental Loss: We will look at the poem "The Fallen Elm" and explore John Clare's feelings of loss of his beloved Helpston because of the impact of the Enclosures Act on rural settlements. How will you respond and make connections to changes in your community over time? We will explore visually and through materials to complete our art journal.
