Beyond the PhD: Skills, careers and the value of research training

Reception Room, Wills Memorial BuildingBristol, England
Tuesday, June 2  •  2:30 PM - 4:30 PM
Overview

A panel discussion with Bristol alumni to help PGRs identify and confidently communicate the capabilities they gain through their PhD.

For University of Bristol Postgraduate Researchers and staff

What does a PhD really prepare you to do? And how can you articulate the strengths, capabilities and mindset you’ve developed through your research?

Join us for Beyond the PhD, a keynote speech, panel discussion and interactive event exploring how doctoral training equips researchers for a wide range of career paths. Drawing inspiration from recent sector conversations about the purpose and value of research degrees, this session brings together reflections on the skills, resilience and problem‑solving abilities that define the PGR experience and how this has shaped their career path.

Through a blend of panel discussion and guided reflection, you’ll gain insight into how others have navigated their post‑PhD journeys and develop the confidence to communicate the capabilities you’re building right now.

What to Expect

Keynote speaker:

Clare Viney, CSci CChem FRSC, CEO of Vitae

Panel Discussion
Hear from a panel of Bristol Alumni representing academic roles, industry, NGO's and the PGR community. Together, they’ll explore:

  • The skills you gain when research doesn’t go to plan
  • What employers value about doctoral graduates
  • Navigating uncertainty, career decisions and identity shifts
  • Real experiences of using a research degree beyond academia

Panelists:

Dr Sophie Kelly, Lecturer in Visual Arts and Cultural Heritage at the University of Bristol

Dr Alex Morden Osborne, Policy Manager, Alzheimer's Society

Dr Amanda Franklin, Technical Lead, Impulsonics

Dr Mikael Allan Mikaelsson, MBE, Policy Fellow, Stockholm Environment Institute

Chaired by:

Professor Harry Mellor, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (PGR)

Q&A

An opportunity to put your questions to the panel.

Mini‑Workshop: Reflecting on Your PhD Skills
This fun, interactive mini‑workshop offers postgraduate researchers a structured opportunity to reflect on the skills they are developing through their PhD and explore how to articulate them confidently.

Through small informal group activities, participants will:

  • Identify key strengths developed through their research
  • Recognise concrete examples to use in applications and interviews
  • Clarify next career steps and the skills needed to get there

Support & Signposting
Learn about the University’s training opportunities, Careers Service support, and research culture initiatives — plus how to continue building your skills profile throughout your PhD.

Networking during the drinks and canapes reception
Continue the conversation at an optional post‑event drinks and canapes reception.
