Why do so many adults with ADHD use alcohol and find it unusually difficult to manage?
This evidence-based workshop explores the complex relationship between ADHD and alcohol use. Moving beyond outdated stereotypes, we will examine ADHD as a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition and unpack why alcohol can feel, at least initially, like it “works”.
Drawing on current research, the session will explain how differences in dopamine, reward processing, and executive function can increase vulnerability to alcohol misuse. You’ll learn why ADHD is strongly linked to earlier drinking, faster progression to dependency, and greater negative consequences… and why this isn’t about willpower, but neurobiology.
Alongside the science, there will be practical, realistic strategies to reduce risk, improve self-regulation, and build alternative sources of reward that don’t involve a hangover and a questionable text message.
Workshop Highlights
- Learn why ADHD and alcohol use are so closely linked
- Unpack the role of dopamine, reward systems, and “internal noise”
- Understand how alcohol affects ADHD symptoms (both short and long term)
- Gain evidence-based approaches to reducing harm and building resilience
