In this interactive workshop on Intellectual Property, you’ll learn the practical steps you need to take to own and defend new inventions, products and brands. Topics include all you need to know about patents, designs, trademarks and copyright.﻿ This workshop also covers the fundamentals of using the BIPC’s and your library’s resources to develop a strategic roadmap for your business. You will be introduced to concepts like the Value Proposition and to tools like the Business Model Canvas, to help you make informed business decisions, plan and offer value to your customer.'﻿Get Started':In this high energy and practical workshop, you will find out how to set up your business and avoid common start-up pitfalls. By the end of the day, you will have the skills, knowledge and confidence to complete a one page business plan.The project  is funded by the British Library, five participating London boroughs and generously supported by JPMorgan Chase & Co.

BIPC Lewisham is proud to welcome Hugh McDonald from His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to guide you through the different options you have when it comes to registering your business with HMRC and outline the key steps to take. During this session, Hugh will share his expertise and cover:- <ul><li>Your obligations to HMRC when it comes to starting a new business venture.</li><li>What to do if you are thinking of becoming your own boss.</li><li>The different ways you can choose to structure your business (Sole Trader, Limited Company, CIC, etc.).</li><li>Key steps to take when registering for self-employment (as a Sole Trader) or when registering your small business as a Limited Company.</li><li>The self-assessment requirements you need to be aware of, such as the tax system, tax payments, how to pay and when (key dates for 2026/2027).</li></ul>After the general overview, we will have a Q&amp;A session for participants on registering for self-employment or registering their small businesses.
