Family Spray Painting Workshop
Join York Civic Trust and Art of Protest for this FREE, family-friendly spray paint workshop inspired by the local places that matter to you
You’ll learn how to use the wonderful medium of spray paint combined with stencils in this jam-packed workshop full of techniques that will allow you to create your very own masterpiece!
No experience is required, just lots of creativity and imagination! Our professional instructors will walk you through each step of the creative process, ensuring you’re having fun, being safe, and learning a new skill.
Classes are designed for both kids and adults to enjoy and we guarantee that even our more experienced hands will find plenty to do as they create their unique work of art.
We will cover basic information such as how a spray can actually works and how to get an even coat of paint onto your canvas. We’ll then go into the process of layering your piece, beginning with using a line breaker to ‘break the canvas’. We’ll then introduce a variety of stencils to create amazing shapes, patterns and textures. For our more advanced participants, we’ll demonstrate and help with drop shadowing, and if needed, we’ll support you with ideas, colour choices, principles of design, and anything else needed to make sure you’re thrilled with your final work of art!
This event is part of York Civic Trust's Our Place project. Based in Acomb and Westfield, this is a new heritage outreach project inviting residents to explore, celebrate, and protect the heritage that makes their neighbourhoods unique.
The Boring Bits…
- Full PPE will be provided including gloves, gown, mask and goggles, as well as a safety brief.
- Parents must stay around to supervise their children during the session. You are welcome to accompany their kids without booking a place (they will not have their own canvas set up to paint) but are also encouraged to purchase a ticket and participate in the workshop alongside their child!
- All participants must be aged 7 or older to sign up for this workshop. Although younger children are often good at following instructions, this is a strict policy due to the fact that small fingers typically struggle when operating spray cans, compromising user safety.
