Overview

Elena A. Bugreeva provides a brief history of translations of Shakespeare's works into the Russian language, from 16th-late 20th century.

Zoom lecture in ENGLISH for SCRSS members and affiliates only - live from St Petersburg.

Shakespeare's genius has always attracted Russian writers and translators. Shakespeare's plays, which are still staged in Russian theatres, are always a success with Russian audiences. This short presentation embraces the history of translations of Shakespeare's works into the Russian language, beginning from the earliest literary contacts between England and Russia in the 16th century to the late 20th century. Elena Bugreeva looks at the key translations and focuses on a more detailed analysis of Hamlet, translated by Boris Pasternak and Mikhail Lozinsky.

Dr Elena A. Bugreeva has two university degrees - in Philology and Translation, and a PhD in Pedagogy. Elena has been teaching English language and culture to Russian students for more than thirty years. Her professional interests include cultural codes in cross-cultural communication, translation, and teaching methods. Elena has launched a project called The Museum of Translation about the life and work of outstanding translators in different historical epochs and the history of the greatest translated books. This presentation is part of the project.
