An introduction to Sashiko inspired slow stitching

An introduction to Sashiko inspired slow stitching

32 Devonport RdPlymouth, Devon
Overview

Discover traditional designs based on Japanese Sashiko grid patterns, while enjoying the calm rhythm of slow stitching.

Practise the gentle art of slow stitching, inspired by Japanese Sashiko. Learn how to

use a grid template, practise simple hand stitching techniques and create a ‘stitch

sampler’ to take home as a reference guide for future projects.

This introductory workshop is suitable for all levels, including complete beginners.

We will take a brief look at the historical background of Sashiko, how and why it

developed and explore how simple running stitches build into beautiful, repeating

geometric patterns. You will be able to practise some of those patterns, creating a

small ‘sampler’ of Sashiko stitches which you will take home and can use as a

reference guide to decorate items of your own.

Sashiko is known for structured motifs made up from grids and interlocking shapes

created through rows of steady, intentional stitching. As you learn the patterns and

see the designs being revealed from simple rows of stitches, you will experience how

the repetition naturally encourages calm focus and presence.

Your tutor has a depth of teaching experience with adults, lifelong creativity and a

personal connection to Japan, having lived there for a time as a child and, more

recently, revisited several times. Her guidance creates a supportive and friendly

environment where the enjoyment of learning and the sharing of a creative experience

come together.

What to expect:

  • Tutor led session with friendly, enthusiastic support at every stage
  • A short introduction to the history of Sashiko, why and how it developed
  • Exploration of how different patterns can be created using grids
  • Step-by-step guidance to create your own Sashiko reference sampler piece
  • Materials pack, containing everything you will need for this session, including Sashiko needle and thread from Japan
  • A relaxed and creative space in which to practise your slow stitching
  • Skills to use after the workshop to create decorative pieces.

Whether you wish to explore a new craft or are seeking a calm, creative experience, this workshop offers an opportunity to stitch with intention and enjoy the quiet satisfaction of creating something beautiful by hand.
