Overview

How can better use of flow data help hospital teams spot realistic opportunities to improve patient flow?

The Art of the Adjacent Possible

Can we find clues within existing practice that suggest improvements in patient flow may be more within our grasp than we think?

In this Midlands Analyst Network Huddle, Neil Pettinger, Training Consultant at Kurtosis, will explore how data might be presented in ways that help inpatient directorates and specialties identify realistic opportunities to improve flow.

Patient flow remains a major challenge for acute hospitals, and without sustained improvement in bed availability it is likely to remain so. Yet the teams responsible for managing beds do not always have easy access to data that helps them see where change may be possible.

This session will propose an approach to presenting flow metrics so that managers and clinicians can make better use of internal benchmarking — what Neil describes as “the adjacent possible” — to identify practical opportunities for improvement.

This is an exploratory session, and Neil will be sharing ideas for how data might be analysed and presented, while actively inviting feedback from people working on the ground about whether and how these ideas might work in practice.

What attendees will learn

  • how flow metrics might be presented to better support operational improvement
  • how internal benchmarking could help identify realistic opportunities for change
  • ways data can support conversations between analysts, managers and clinicians
  • practical ideas for analysing and communicating patient flow data differently

Who is this session for?

This Huddle will be particularly relevant to:

  • analysts working with acute hospital data
  • managers and clinicians grappling with patient flow
  • improvement leads and operational teams interested in bed availability and flow
  • anyone interested in how data can support realistic, practical change in acute care
