Voices of Home: Women and Everyday Life in Cypriot Culture

Voices of Home: Women and Everyday Life in Cypriot Culture

The Cyprus High Commission
Thursday, June 4  •  11 AM - 3 PM
Overview

An immersive sound installation exploring women, memory, home and everyday life in the Cypriot diaspora.

Following the wonderful response to Voices of Home and after receiving requests from audiences wishing to experience the installation, Cyprus House is delighted to create an additional opportunity to encounter Maria Christodoulou’s moving work.

Voices of Home is an immersive audio installation that recreates the atmosphere of a traditional Cypriot household in the UK, inviting visitors into a living archive of multigenerational domestic culture and memory.

Through recordings of women and girls in their homes, the installation transforms the gallery into an intimate soundscape of voices, rituals, and everyday moments that carry histories across generations and borders.

At a time when THERE IS AN ISLAND III reflects on women and everyday life, this work reminds us that culture is often preserved in the quiet spaces of daily life around tables, through stories, gestures, and memories shared between people.

For many within our diaspora, these sounds and experiences feel deeply familiar; for others, they offer a window into the intimate realities that continue to shape Cypriot identity beyond the island itself.

We invite you to take your time, listen, reflect, and step into a space where memory becomes something lived and shared.
