BPEC Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS)

BPEC Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS)

Overview

This is a 2 day course split over 2 weeks, delivered on a Monday

COURSE CONTENT

The BPEC Level 3 Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) course focuses on the design, installation, and commissioning of battery storage setups, typically integrated with solar PV. Core Topics Covered:

  • Purpose and Operation: Key operating principles, types of battery chemistry (such as Lithium-ion), and how EESS interacts with gridtied systems.
  • Regulations and Standards: Compliance with the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems and Building Regulations.
  • System Architecture: Configurations for AC-coupled systems, DC-coupled systems, hybrid setups, and operating in island mode (backup power during grid outages).
  • Component Selection & Siting: Sizing battery capacity based on customer demand, selecting optimal installation locations, and assessing ventilation, fire safety, and weight restrictions.
  • Installation & Integration: Safe isolation, structural mounting, routing DC/AC cables, and integrating battery management systems (BMS).
  • Inspection, Testing & Commissioning: Verification procedures, earth loop impedance testing, polarity checks, and handing over the system to the end-user.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To enrol onto the BPEC Level 3 Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) course, you must be a practicing, competent electrician. The entry criteria strictly align with the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS) standards

Core Requirements:

  • 18th Edition Regulations: You must hold a valid BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations qualification.
  • Industry Experience: Experience in electrical installations, as well as associated inspection and testing, is required.

Accepted Competency Qualifications. You must provide proof of one of the following formal vocational credentials:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (2357).
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification (5357).
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification (2346).
  • SVQ in Electrical Installation at SCQF Level 7 (for installers in Scotland).
  • An active ECS Gold Card, JIB Electrician Card, or Approved Electrician Card

AWARD

To achieve the qualification, you must complete two mandatory assessments:

  • Theoretical Exam: A multiple-choice, open-book exam based on the relevant IET Code of Practice.
  • Practical Assessment: A hands-on assessment covering system design scenarios, physical installation steps, testing, and fault-finding.
