The Trinity in Christian Life

In a Zoom session on Tuesday 10th November, 2026 MBI will host a reflection on the Holy Trinity. Sometimes people are, not surprisingly, uncertain about how the Trinity relates to Christian life. After all, it is a mystery beyond our understanding. This MBI session, however, invites us to reflect on the fact that this mystery is a living reality which touches every moment of Christian life. It invites us to see that the one God revealed himself as a communion of love and life into which, thanks to the death and resurrection of Christ and the gift of his Spirit, we are invited to participate as sons and daughters of the Father.

In words that go to the heart of the Christian life, Jesus prayed to the Father in the Gospel “that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them” (Jn 17: 26); that gift of love is reflected in the words of the Risen Christ to his disciples , today as yesterday, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22).

In a meeting in Rome with Pontifical Mission Societies in May last year, Pope Leo said, “you are called to cultivate and further promote in your members the vision of the Church as the communion of believers enlivened by the Holy Spirit, who enables us to enter into the perfect communion and harmony of the blessed Trinity … Indeed, he marvelled, it is in the Trinity that all things find their unity.

“This dimension of the Christian life and mission”, added the pope, “is close to my heart. It is reflected in the words of Saint Augustine that I chose for my episcopal service and for my papal ministry: In illo uno unum – in the One, we are one. Christ is our Saviour and in him we are one, a family of God, beyond the rich variety of our languages, cultures and experiences.”

The Zoom session of 10th November, led by Dr Peter Coughlan, honorary fellow of MBI, will consist of a talk and discussion.
