Rorke's Drift with Rob Caskie

Steppes Travel

An immersive lecture by Rob Caskie as he explores one of the most remarkable and enduring stories in British and South African history.

St Andrew’s Church

For those fortunate enough to have joined us at the Royal Hospital Chelsea for Rob Caskie's unforgettable Anglo-Boer War lecture last year, you'll know that an evening in his company is far more than a history lesson. It is an immersive performance: vivid storytelling that transports you to another time, bringing history to life with extraordinary energy, emotion and insight. This October, we are delighted to welcome Rob back for a very special Steppes event, exploring one of the most remarkable and enduring stories in British and South African history. Rorke's DriftSt Andrew's Church, Churcham, GloucestershireRob turns to one of history's most celebrated defences. Following the disaster at Isandlwana, little more than 150 soldiers defended the mission station at Rorke's Drift against several thousand Zulu warriors through a long night of relentless attack. Their courage became legendary, with eleven Victoria Crosses awarded for the action. Our venue makes this evening uniquely special. St Andrew's Church, Churcham, is the final resting place of Alfred Henry Hook VC, one of the heroes immortalised in the defence of Rorke's Drift. Standing just yards from his grave, the story acquires an immediacy and poignancy that few places can offer.Today, historians increasingly view Rorke's Drift not simply as a story of heroism, but alongside the courage and determination displayed on both sides of the conflict. Together with Isandlwana, it invites us to reflect on the shared history that continues to connect Britain and South Africa, while recognising the perspectives and sacrifices of all those involved. As always with Rob, these are evenings that appeal not only to military enthusiasts, but to anyone fascinated by great stories, remarkable characters and the moments that shape nations. This evening will blend Rob's signature blend of storytelling with appropriate live music, followed by a wine reception; an opportunity to continue the conversation with fellow guests. We are delighted to announce that the music will be provided by the world famous Morlais Male Choir from the Rhondda, who will also talk through their link to Stanley Baker and the film, Zulu. Ticket donationsThere is no charge for tickets but we would be grateful if a donation could be made towards supporting the Ash Family as they prepare to undertake one of the world's toughest endurance challenges: rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in the World's Toughest Row 2027. The Ash family are taking on this extraordinary expedition in memory of Robert Ash, raising vital funds for Suicide&Co, the charity that supported them following his death and which helps people bereaved by suicide across the UK.Please donate via this link: https://www.gofundme.com/manage/supporting-an-extraordinary-journey
