This lecture argues international law strengthens, not limits, UK interests, using the Chagos Islands and Mauritius as a case in point.
Respect for the international rule of law is vital to protecting the UK’s national interest. Rather than limiting nations, adherence to international law strengthens a country’s reputation and ability to build enduring partnerships. The debate over returning the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius, while leasing back islands such as Diego Garcia, illustrates this. Proper decolonisation, consistent with the ICJ Advisory Opinion, supports both international legal obligations and the UK’s national interest by lawfully securing future use through a principled, pragmatic multilateral approach.
