Dr Ali Tajvidi outlines how Iranian-Russian relations have developed over the last two centuries until the present.
In his talk Dr Tajvidi explains the evolution of Iranian-Russian relations, particularly over the last two centuries. The five Russo-Persian wars from 1651 to 1828 demonstrate the extent of rivalry between the two empires. With the advent of the Bolshevik Revolution, Iran adopted an anti-communist position and sided with the West in containing the Soviet Union. The 1979 Iranian Revolution marked the beginning of a new chapter in relations between the two countries, despite the seemingly antagonistic Islamic and communist ideologies. Today Russia and Iran are strategic allies, and also members of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Dr Ali Tajvidi is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Westminster, with a specialisation in US foreign policy. However, his current research interests are the Russia-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and the European Security Architecture after the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Cancellations and refunds policy: online talks
- If the SCRSS cancels the event, your ticket payment will be refunded in full.
- The SCRSS allows cancellations and refunds up to 7 days before the event.
- Eventbrite charges a booking fee on all ticket bookings, as well as individual cancellations / refunds:
-- For bookings, the SCRSS absorbs the Eventbrite fee, rather than adding it on top of the ticket price.
-- However, as a registered charity with no external funding, the SCRSS is not able to absorb the Eventbrite fee on refunds when you cancel your ticket, as this would leave us out of pocket. Therefore, please be aware that if you cancel, the Eventbrite fee will be deducted from your refund. For online talks, we recommend that you do not cancel, even if you cannot attend the live event, as the SCRSS always sends out a recording link within 48 hours of the online talk finish.
