Ulster Orchestra BBC Radio 3 Concert: Beginnings and Endings

Ulster Orchestra BBC Radio 3 Concert: Beginnings and Endings

Overview

The first orchestral work by Ethel Smyth and the last by Benjamin Britten come side-by-side in this orchestral celebration of British music.

Britten Suite on English Folk Tunes A Time There Was Op.90
Ethel Smyth Serenade in D major

Karen Ní Bhroin Conductor

From the familiar contours of folk melodies to the graceful charm of the concert hall, Benjamin Britten and Ethel Smyth showcase two contrasting approaches to musical tradition. Britten's Suite on English Folk Tunes, his final orchestral work, is a poignant and nostalgic reflection on traditional melodies, while Smyth's Serenade in D major, her first orchestral composition, shines with lush warmth, humour, raucous intensity and the quiet passion that characterises so much great British music.

The Ulster Orchestra is conducted by Karen Ní Bhroin, one of Ireland’s foremost young conductors.
