Beyond The Label: Understanding Autism

Online event
Overview

A neuroaffirming exploration of autism, discussing traits, myths, strengths, challenges and diagnosis.

Autism is often talked about, but often misunderstood. With increasing awareness, growing numbers of diagnoses, and a vast amount of information available online, many parents and carers are left with more questions than answers.

This workshop is designed to provide a balanced, neuroaffirming introduction to autism, helping you move beyond stereotypes and gain a deeper understanding of what autism really is, what it isn't, and how autistic people may experience the world.

Whether you are exploring the possibility of autism, supporting a young person through assessment, have recently received a diagnosis, or simply want to learn more, this session will provide practical information in a supportive and accessible way.

During the workshop we will explore:

  • What autism is and how our understanding has evolved
  • Common characteristics and autistic differences
  • Myths, misconceptions and stereotypes about autism
  • Sensory processing and its impact on daily life
  • Communication, social interaction and relationships
  • Masking and the hidden experiences of autistic young people
  • Strengths, challenges and individual differences
  • Understanding behaviour as communication
  • The autism assessment and diagnostic process
  • What support may be helpful following identification or diagnosis

My approach is neuroaffirming and strengths-based, recognising autism as a natural variation in human neurodevelopment rather than something that needs to be fixed. The focus is on developing understanding, reducing stigma, helping families better support autistic young people and individuals to better understand themselves in ways that respect and value their individual needs.
