Join us for this Open House Sketch Session at Trinity Buoy Wharf with Lucie Holzer, exhibiting artist, in association with London Open House at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London on Saturday 19 September at 2pm.

Be inspired by the 92 drawing on show in the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2026 exhibition and enjoy this unique opportunity to sketch at Trinity Buoy Wharf, with its inspiring architecture and riverside location, in a drawing session led by the artist Lucie Holzer, who draws locations in London as an integral element of her drawing practice. Drawing materials will be available but please bring along a sketchbook and pencils, and wear walking shoes and weather appropriate clothes. Suitable for 16+. The session runs for 1.5 hours, please gather in the exhibition before 2pm, as the session will start promptly.

Lucie Holzer (b.1995 London, England) studied BA (Hons) in Painting and Printmaking at The Glasgow School of Art (2014-17) and MA Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, London (2021-23). Lucie says of her drawing, Stairway at Dusk, 2026, included in the exhibition: "I use intricate, time-dense mark making processes to forensically examine overlooked urban spaces at the borderline between inside and outside. Locked doorways, boarded-up windows and liminal entryways suggest the tantalising proximity of hidden interior worlds, whilst refusing access to a fixed definition of what exists beyond the threshold. This body of work explores the temporal climate of landscapes around Whitechapel and Stepney Green forgotten by gentrification. Areas overlooked in the quest to monetise every inch of London subtly resist corporate, ahistorical approaches to place and the erasure of lived histories it precipitates.

Alternating between additive and reductive drawing processes echoes an interest in how histories of place are built and buried over time. I create layered tonal areas of charcoal and graphite pencil and dense accretions of ink before rubbing into the paper to obscure marks. Working from a mix of memory, imagination and photographic reference material I build drawings slowly. Spending more time with images creates room to metabolise the atmosphere of the places I depict. Imaginary elements, including non-naturalistic shadows and reflections and a collapse of formal boundaries between depth and flatness, create uncanny, dreamlike spaces in which ephemeral, emotive qualities of real places are amplified and distorted."

About the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2026: Known as the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing, the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2026, is the 32nd edition. A total of 92 drawings by 86 drawing practitioners were chosen by the two distinguished Selection Panels for the exhibition, and shortlisted for the annual awards.

The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2026 exhibition is open to the public from Thursday 17 September until Sunday 4 October 2026 at Trinity Buoy Wharf, open daily from 11am to 6pm. It will then tour to museums and galleries into 2027.

Accompanying the exhibition is a fully illustrated Exhibition Publication, a downloadable Education Pack, and a programme of educational events including a Drawing Symposium on Thursday 17 September 2026.
