In 1963, the Jones family are being forced from the North Wales farm they have worked for generations. Their valley is to be flooded and turned into a reservoir supplying water to Liverpool.

While Dai is grief-stricken, his wife Olwen privately sees the move as a chance to escape the confines of the valley. Their teenage son Emyr responds with anger and is drawn into the Welsh Resistance Army.

Inspired by the events surrounding the flooding of the Tryweryn Valley, Adder Stone explores family, land and national identity. It asks who we become when we lose the places that define us, how far we will go for our children or our country, and whether love can survive the choices people make in anger.

Clare talks about the history behind the novel, transforming real events into fiction and finding the individual lives within a larger political struggle.
