1st LSE Computational Social Science Hackathon

Computational Social Science (CSS) is a sub-category of the social sciences that relies on computational methods and/or big data to address larger societal issues of inequality, healthcare, education, democracy and more. CSS skills and knowledge are of particular interest to the biggest tech firms as they recruit for CSS skills to understand their users and leverage their data. We thus aim to build a new brand of computational social scientists at the LSE.

LSESU Computational Social Science Society

<P>Are you interested in the intersection of social science and data science? Do you want to use your coding and data analysis skills to tackle social science problems? Are you looking for career opportunities in technology? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, you should participate in the 1st LSE Computational Social Science Hackathon!</P>
<P>The two-and-a-half day event will boast four computational social science challenges that will be solved by groups of approximately 10-12 participants each.</P>
<P>On top of that you can expect exciting R and Python workshops by:</P>

<LI>Introduction to SNA and Network Visualisation in R: Sílvia Majó-Vázquez; University of Oxford</LI>
<LI>Applied Predictive Modelling with caret: Gokhan Ciflikli; LSE</LI>

<P>Moreover, there will be an intersectional tech careers panel featuring:</P>

<LI>Anna Louise Schröder, Senior Data Science at XL Catlin</LI>

<P>and a workshop on how to land a data science job by Ela Osterberger (Director of Analytics, Deliveroo), providing you with an invaluable opportunity to explore and learn from their career trajectories and kick-start your own tech career.</P>
<P>Each participant will be provided with $50 worth of Google Cloud credits that are good for the duration of the event.</P>
