About this event

The Foundation course is a CPD-certified and for people who are new to content design or want to improve their skills. You should be used to writing or familiar with creating content for websites or apps.

What you'll learn

Building on Sarah Winters’ book, this course gives you the chance to design a single piece of content. You’ll do this by finding out who your users are, what they want from you, what they need and how to give it to them.

You’ll learn how to carry out desk research, understand it, and use this information to make evidence-based decisions.

At the end of the 2 days, you’ll be able to:

  • understand how users think, talk and act,
  • explain what your users want,
  • visualise the journeys users take,
  • organise content across channels to support their journey,
  • understand how people read,
  • structure information to match how people behave online,
  • create user-centred content,
  • improve content by working with others.

CPD accredited

Content Design London’s courses are CPD accredited. This means our programmes have been reviewed independently and certified for their quality. If you complete the course, you will receive a certificate.

How you'll learn

Our courses are taught in small groups, so our class sizes are never more than 16 people. You’ll complete individual exercises, group work and take part in discussions. You’ll also have the chance to get 1 to 1 support.

Where and when the course happens

Courses start each day at 9.30am and finish at 4pm. On both days, we have a morning break and an afternoon break, and 1 hour for lunch.

Our courses are delivered in person or online, via Zoom. If you attend online, you’ll need:

  • a good internet connection,
  • an up to date web browser,
  • a webcam,
  • a Google account to log in to Google Docs.

If you attend in person, you’ll need to bring a laptop or a tablet with you. We’ll provide everything else, including lunch.

Please note we are not able to share slides.

Trainers

Your trainers will be 2 of Weave’s experienced content designers, Angus Gordon, Lorien Kaye and McGee Noble. Weave has taken a strategic approach to content since it was founded in 2009. In 2017 Weave recognised Sarah Winters’ Content Design as a missing piece of the great content puzzle, resulting in changes to their processes and better outcomes for their clients. Testimonials for this course from previous Australia participants:

"If you're going to take content seriously, it's an essential course"

""For anyone who is a writer, editor, content producer, or even developer or UX - this is a course which will help guide every decision you make. It has helped me question every slither of content that I write or produce - what it's purpose is and if it's absolutely necessary. It's given me the confidence to speak up about content's importance and how imperative it is that content design is collaborative"

"I really loved the Content Design course! It was so valuable to my role covering discovery, writing content, content design, data, and strategies to aid discussions with senior stakeholders including pair writing and content crits. It also gave me a renewed enthusiasm! Sometimes as a content designer, you begin to doubt yourself when you’re faced with challenging legal, product, risk or even communication stakeholders. It’s nice to know you’re not crazy and we all face similar problems! :)"

"This was an extremely well designed and presented course that exceeded my expectations. The facilitators were experts in their field and engaged with the group well. It was great to have an opportunity to meet Susan Cowan and the CD Queen herself, Sarah Richardson! Participation in this course has been life-changing. I have had a total shift in my thinking about presenting information. I have returned to the office with a clear vision of how the Library's inter/intranet can be presented. An unexpected bonus is that it has given my creative and non-fiction writing a nuclear-strength injection of motivation and inspiration"

"It's worth every cent. It should be compulsory for anyone who has to write anything to attend this course" "I would tell anyone working in the content space to definitely attend. It's great foundational knowledge but also a good refresher on all the steps to take before you start writing"

Organised by

Content Design London is owned by Sarah Winters (formerly Richards), the first head of content design for the Government Digital Service (GDS). Sarah set and implemented the content strategy for www.gov.uk as well as creating the standards and discipline of content design for the UK government.

Working with organisations around the world, Sarah and her team run their own projects as well as offer training, so they quite literally practice what they preach. The experience shared in the training are from examples of real-world situations.
