Patterns of Promise: Discovering Christ in the Old Testament
A Study Day with the Dominican Friars at Blackfriars, Oxford
What do Adam, Joshua, the Son of Man and the suffering Job have to do with Jesus Christ?
The writers of the New Testament saw the Old Testament as a world alive with patterns, promises and mysteries pointing towards Christ.
Join us at Blackfriars Oxford to learn how to read these ancient texts with new eyes—and to discover how the story of prophets and patriarchs opens into the Gospel.
This study day for lay people is designed to strengthen your faith and understanding (online attendance also available: see below).
Fr Nicholas Crowe OP (Prior Provincial, Province of England) and Fr Richard Ounsworth OP (Prior, Holy Cross, Leicester) will be your guides on this exploration of the Christian faith.
- A Type of the One to Come - St Paul's typological reading of the Old Testament
- What's in a Name? - The Joshua Christology of Hebrews
This day will be followed by two online sessions on the following Monday evenings (2 & 9 November), 7.30pm UK time, to consolidate and further develop your understanding of this theme.
- 'I saw in the night visions' - Jesus as the Son of Man
- Failing to find Christ? - The problem of the Book of Job
As well as talks and discussions, the day will allow you opportunities to pray in the beautiful Blackfriars church, and to have conversations with the friars and with other participants.
- Lunch and refreshments are provided (please notify of any dietary requirements).
