Holding It Together: Understanding After-School Restraint Collapse

STRIVE NI works to provide workshops and support for parents, children and teaching staff in Northern Ireland.  We offer one-to-one sessions with children and young people and also offer workshops for parents and professionals on various topics (such as autism, sleep support, emotional regulation and behaviour management among others).   We also offer school intervention sessions for children, both individually, in groups or in classes.Our main aim is to support children and young people who are experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (including ASD).

Understand After-School Restraint Collapse and discover practical ways to support children experiencing overwhelm after school

An online workshop for parents, carers and professionals supporting children and young people who appear to cope all day...only to unravel when they get home.Have you ever wondered why a child can seemingly manage throughout the school day but the moment they get home everything falls apart?Perhaps school reports that they are settled, compliant or “absolutely grand” yet at home you see meltdowns, shutdowns, anger, tears, exhaustion, withdrawal or an inability to cope with even the smallest request.This workshop explores After-School Restraint Collapse, a term used to describe what can happen when a child has spent the day managing demands, emotions, sensory experiences and expectations, only to release that accumulated stress once they reach a place where they feel able to do so.This workshop is suitable for parents &amp; carers, teachers, SENCOs, LSAs and other professionals working with children and young people. We will look beyond the behaviour we see and become curious about what may be happening underneath it.<h3>During the session, we will explore:</h3><ul><li>What After-School Restraint Collapse is and why it can happen</li><li>The hidden effort involved in 'holding it together'</li><li>Masking, sensory load, emotional regulation and accumulated demands</li><li>Different presentations of overwhelm, including meltdowns and shutdowns </li><li>Practical ways to create a more gentle transition from school to home</li><li>Regulation and co-regulation strategies</li><li>How home and school can work together to understand the whole child rather than viewing behaviour in isolation</li></ul>
