South Uist Fluke & Healthy Peatlands: Benefits for Crofts & Common Grazings

Come along to this FAS meeting focusing on fluke and the benefits of healthy peatlands for crofters and livestock at Borrodale Hotel, on Wednesday 21st October, 7pm start for presentations.

This event will give you an insight into how parasite control and peatland restoration can improve the sustainability of your croft or improve a common grazing. Tailoring your parasite control strategy can reduce inputs which directly reduces costs and improves profitability. While peatland restoration presents a funded opportunity to improve the condition of grazings and reduce livestock losses following the removal of hags, drains and gullies, are there potential win-wins and unintended consequences for animal health?

This is an opportunity to hear about and discuss practical ways to improve the health, productivity and sustainability of your croft or common grazing with experts from Moredun and Peatland ACTION

• Testing, timings and treatment options for liver fluke
• The benefits of peatland restoration including improving the conditions of the grazings, fewer livestock losses and better access for gathering

On Thursday 22nd October, there will be an opportunity to attend an afternoon site visit at Cheesebay in North Uist. This site has been used as a training site for peatland restoration techniques.
