Growing Fungi at Brixton Orchard: A Hands-On Workshop
Get your hands dirty learning how to grow your own funky fungi in this fun, hands-on workshop!
Join us at Brixton Orchard for a hands-on fungi workshop with London Mycology Project, exploring how fungi and mycelium can support biodiversity, soil health and plant growth.
Together, we'll explore different ways of introducing fungi into the Orchard, building on the work already taking place to create a more biodiverse and sustainable green space.
During the workshop, we'll look at:
🍄 Mycelium Mulch
Explore how native oyster mushroom mycelium can be introduced into different areas of the Orchard, including around trees, near the dead hedge and along the pollinator border. We'll discuss how mycelium can support soil health and its potential role in improving the growing environment.
🌱 Winecap Mushrooms (King Stropharia)
Learn about growing Winecap mushrooms in woodchip and how they can contribute to soil health and organic matter while potentially producing edible mushrooms.
♻️ Growing Fungi Using Local Waste
Discover how materials such as prunings, straw and other organic byproducts can be used to explore circular approaches to fungi cultivation. We'll look at how fungi can help us make use of local resources, with information about growing mushrooms at home.
The workshop is an opportunity to learn more about the fascinating role fungi play in ecosystems, explore practical cultivation techniques and contribute to the ongoing development of Brixton Orchard.
No previous experience with fungi or gardening is needed. Everyone is welcome!
