Women's Circle: The Map You Were Never Given | Your Clitoris, Your Anatomy, Your Pleasure

Overview

You were given a diagram with a dot on it. Most of it is inside you, and nobody mentioned that. Sun 22 Nov, N11.

Somebody once drew you a diagram. An oval, a few lines, a small dot near the top.

That was it. That was the map you were given for your own body, and most of us have been working from it ever since.

And we have all been getting on with it anyway. For some of us it works and there is real pleasure. For some it is over almost before it has started. For some it takes so long that we give up, or quietly decide there is something wrong with us. For some there is pleasure, and something still feels missing. And for some of us it is uncomfortable, or nothing much happens at all.

None of that was on the diagram either.

What the diagram left out

The small dot is the tip of something about the size of your palm.

It has a body that runs back under the pubic bone. It has two legs that run down either side, and two bulbs that sit under the lips, either side of the opening. It fills and firms and changes shape. Most of it is inside you.

It was drawn in full anatomical detail back in the 1840s, and then dropped out of most medical textbooks for the best part of a century. A fully labelled picture of the whole thing did not appear in Gray's Anatomy until 2008.

Nobody mentioned any of that. Not at school, not in the magazines, not by the person who drew you the oval.

Why it matters, beyond being annoying

You cannot feel what you do not know is there. Attention follows the map you were given, and if the map stops at a dot, your attention tends to stop there too.

It is hard to ask for what you have no words for. Most of us were handed one word for the whole territory, and often the wrong one.

And most of us have become very still. Somewhere along the way we learned to hold the belly in, keep the legs together, not make a fuss, not move too much. Then we take that stillness to bed, where one person moves and the other receives it, and we wonder why sensation stays in one small place and stays faint.

Sensation spreads through movement and breath. That is old knowledge, and almost nobody is taught it.

What this morning is

A small group of women, a warm front room in North London, and two and a half hours to put all of that right side up.

You go first. Before anything is explained, there is a guided meditation where you take your own attention slowly through your own pelvis and find out what is there today, in your own words. Nothing is suggested to you, because then you would only be feeling my words.

Then you see the real map. A model you can hold, clear pictures, and plain language: the whole structure, the pelvic floor and what it actually does, and what changes across a life and why changed is not broken.

Then you move. Gentle, guided movement of the pelvis with the breath, everyone together, waking up a part of the body most of us keep completely still.

And then you join it to your heart. A simple tantric breath practice, root to heart on the in breath and back on the out breath. It takes five minutes and you take it home written down. It is the part most women still have a month later.

What you can count on

Everyone stays fully clothed, the whole morning. Nobody touches anybody, including me. Nothing is looked at, shown or examined. The only hands on you are your own, resting on top of your clothes.

You are never asked to share anything you do not want to, and you can sit any part of it out without explaining why.

The group is small, often three or four women. Most come on their own, having done nothing like this before. Women come to these circles in their twenties and in their seventies.

And if you find very little, that is a real answer and a common one. It is not a failed morning.

A note on sensitivity

Bringing attention to this part of the body can bring things up: pain, numbness, dryness, or memory. All of it is welcome here and none of it is required. Everything can be done with attention alone.

Please tell me when you book if there is anything I should know, including pelvic pain, prolapse, recent surgery, or if you are pregnant. If you are carrying significant trauma, particularly sexual trauma, please consider working alongside a trauma-informed therapist as well as coming to a circle like this one.

About your facilitator

Melanie Knight is a Certified Sexological Bodyworker and Somatic Sex Educator, and has been teaching tantra for many years. She creates spaces where women can slow down and reconnect with their bodies, without pressure and without performance. Her approach is trauma-informed and consent-based.

An oval, a few lines and a small dot. You have been working from that drawing for long enough.

Sunday 22nd November, 11:00. Book below.

The circle runs monthly and each one stands on its own, so you do not need to have been to any other. Next: The Body's Own Fire on Sunday 6th December, where we end the year lying down and breathing, and the body raises its own charge. No hands, and nothing done to you.
