A superpower for children and young people who have experienced early adversity.
In this session we'll think all about bodily regulation - the way your child moves and makes sense of the world around them. We don’t tend to spend much time thinking about it, but bodily regulation is critical for each of us in giving our body a platform for the development of more complex skills such as managing feelings, playing or making and keeping friends.
Bodily regulation starts developing at conception and continues through a child’s early life. Where there’s been disruption at the beginning of a child’s life, bodily regulation has usually been affected. But it’s never too late! We’ll think about the work we do to support families to go back and fill in gaps in touch, nurture and movement to help children and young people feel more comfortable in their body.
We’ll share findings from recent research conducted by Newcastle University, highlighting the differences that building bodily regulation can have on children’s emotional regulation and relationships, as well as the impact this way of working has on strengthening parent - child relationships. You'll also hear from parents who have worked in this way with their children and the difference it made for them.
Finally, we’ll think with parents about how they might start to notice their child’s bodily regulation and the clues that their child gives in everyday life (e.g. sitting, walking, running, as well as how they manage noisy environments, pain, eating and touch). All of these build up the picture of their child’s foundation sensorimotor systems, which underpin good bodily regulation.
We’d love you to come and join us - whatever age your child is and whether this is completely new to you or something you're already interested in! This webinar will be aimed at parents and carers, but anyone who supports children and families (from extended family, friends or professionals working in this field) are of course very welcome to attend too.
