The Room: From Forums to For You – The Manosphere and Misogyny on TikTok
Unfiltered feminist conversations about the world we live in.
Why is misogynistic content appearing in our social media feeds, and what happens when online communities built around hostility towards women move into our everyday digital lives?
From online forums to TikTok’s For You page, the manosphere has found new ways to reach audiences, shape conversations and spread ideas about gender, relationships and feminism.
Join us for the 1st instalment of The Room, a conversation series creating space for curious, honest and thought-provoking conversations about the issues shaping women’s lives and the world around us.
Our guest speaker, Hannah Mays, Doctoral Researcher in Cyberpsychology at Brunel University, will share findings from one of her recent studies exploring manosphere groups and misogyny on TikTok. She will examine how these groups are using the platform, how misogyny manifests in these spaces, and how we can become more critical and conscious viewers of video-based content.
This is an opportunity to look beyond the algorithm, question what we see online and explore the relationship between social media, feminism and the attitudes we encounter in everyday life.
Questions we'll be exploring
- How can we be more conscious of the content we’re viewing?
- What role does feminism have in regards to online platforms/groups/communities/spaces?
- What effects might online misogyny have on women using social media?
- Manosphere groups are inherently antifeminist. How can we (and should we?) make feminism more understood online, particularly in terms of manospheregroups/influencers?
You don't need to be an academic or an expert in social media to join the conversation. Whether you're curious about digital culture, concerned about online misogyny, interested in feminism or simply want to understand more about what is appearing on your feed, you're welcome in The Room.
