Dr Craig Johnston

Associate Professor – Criminology | University of the West of England

This free online seminar will explore the vital role of Alternative Provision (AP) in supporting children and young people who are educated outside mainstream schools. Drawing on over 35 years of lived and professional experience, this session shines a light on the journeys of some of the most disadvantaged young people and the challenges and opportunities they face.

Craig will introduce a fresh way of understanding Alternative Provision, looking at how relationships, opportunities, resources, and support can shape young people's futures. It explores how these factors can sometimes reinforce disadvantage, but also create pathways for growth, confidence, and success.

He will examine how Alternative Provision has developed over time and discuss the policies, systems, and decisions that influence the experiences of young people today. The session uncovers some of the less visible forces that affect educational outcomes and life chances, while highlighting examples of resilience, hope, and positive change.

Although focused on England, the discussion connects to wider international conversations about school exclusion, social justice, and educational equality. This seminar will be of interest to educators, leaders, researchers, policymakers, and anyone passionate about creating more inclusive and equitable opportunities for young people.
