Liv Little discusses her new novel Bitter Melon, a Jamaican roadtrip story of roots, remembrance and father-daughter relationships
Deep, delicate and told with great tenderness, Liv Little's latest novel Bitter Melon follows protagonist Jalissa as she joins her semi-estranged dad in Jamaica, his homeland, embracing the chance to escape a recent heartbreak. The long-held silence between them finally starts to loosen as they move through the lush landscape, unwinding tangled family truths and coming to know each other after so many distant years. Along the way they meet people whose perspectives reshape their own, helping them reconcile with the past, face the present and reimagine the road ahead.
A Margate alumnus whose acclaimed debut novel, Rosewater came out in 2023, Liv Little's work spans fiction, journalism, screenwriting and broadcasting. The founder of gal-dem, the award-winning magazine and media platform, Liv is a Contributing Editor at ELLE UK. She'll be talking all-things Bitter Melon with Emma Dabiri, a fellow poly-hyphenate and the author of Disobedient Bodies, Don't Touch My Hair and What White People Can Do Next.
