Do archives have a social purpose? British society today is increasingly divided, and divided along line of identity. History demonstrates that dangerous and revolutionary action can occur at these moments of deep identity based division. How should archivists respond? What responsibility do archivists have to documenting contemporary actions, or to activating their collections as tools for social justice?Speaker Bio:<a href="https://blackculturalarchives.org/blog/2019/3/26/up-close-and-personal-with-arike-oke-bcas-managing-director" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Arike Oke</a> is the Managing Director for Black Cultural Archives, the home of Black British history. She’s worked in heritage for over 15 years, from the seminal Connecting Histories project in Birmingham, to building Wellcome Collection’s archive, and co-convening Hull’s first Black History Month. Arike is a board member for the National Archives’ strategic Unlocking Archives initiative, and is currently a fellow of the Arts Council’s Museums and Resilient Leadership programme.The lecture will take place 5-6pm and be followed by a drinks reception 6-7pm.
