THE FUTURE'S BRIGHT, THE FUTURE'S AUTONOMOUS

Dr ALVIN WILBY
VICE PRESIDENT, RESEARCH, TECHNICAL & INNOVATION, THALES UK

The Royal Aeronautical Society Solent Branch committee is delighted to have Dr Alvin Wilby presenting our RJ Mitchell lecture for 2019.  Dr Wilby is the Vice President for Research, Technical & Innovation, of Thales UK, a world leading international company in the aerospace, space, transportation, defence and security sectors.

The autonomous revolution is being empowered by many technologies and becoming a reality through the efforts of visionaries in companies from the smallest to the largest.  Thales are at the centre of those technologies and Dr Wilby will present how the vision of his team and the technologies they are developing are driving our future in all domains, including aerospace.

Dr Wilby will start by reflecting on the prolific innovator Mitchell, and his own experience of competing for the “Mitchell Trophy” – made of metal from a Spitfire wing spar – in the 2008 MoD “Grand Challenge”.

The “Grand Challenge” saw autonomous Unmanned Air Systems (UAS) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) cooperating to identify Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and snipers – a classic example of the use of autonomy to address the Four Ds - “Dull, Dirty, Dangerous and Difficult” missions.

Coming up to date, he will describe the partnership between Thales and Southampton University on Maritime Autonomy, as well as addressing autonomy developments in the rail and automotive sectors.

Finally, he will reflect on the experiences operating (and crashing) military UAS to highlight one of the most challenging aspects of autonomous systems – the human beings!

This illustrates where improvements in the approach to safety certification are needed, if we are to deliver autonomous systems which are objectively safe as well as perceived to be safe by the public.

All of our lectures are free of charge and open to everyone.

The event opens at 18:00 for a drinks reception and networking, with the lecture commencing at 19:00.
